First African American fighter pilot to down enemy aircraft

Charles Hall of Brazil, Ind., recorded the first aerial combat victory for the 99th Fighter Squadron and became the first African American fighter pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft. It happened while Hall, who was flying a P-40, was escorting B-25 bombers over Italy during his eighth mission.
