First black woman elected US CongressShirley Chisholm becomes the first African American woman to be elected to the US Congress.

Her mother was from the Caribbean island of Barbados and her father from Guyana.

She represented New York's 12th District for seven terms from 1968 to 1983 and was also the first the first major party African American candidate for President of the United States in 1972.
