Patricia HarrisPatricia Harris, the first African American woman to serve as US Ambassador (to Luxemborg) and the first to hold be appointed to a Presidential cabinet born in Mattoon Illinois.

She was appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development by President Jimmy Careter in 1977.
