Black inventor receives patent for Shoe Lasting Machine

Born in Suriname (Caribbean), then called Dutch Guiana Jan Matzeliger emmigrated to the United States where he invented the "Shoe Lasting Machine" which increased the capacity of shoe makers who were then limited to outputting 50 shoes a day to ove 700 daily.
